The MTV Video Music Awards took place at the Nokia Theatre on Sunday. The black carpet was an explosion of colour, material, trends and style; from minimal and chic; to extravagant and avant-garde.

One of my favourite looks of the night has to be the young and talented Selena Gomez. The teen fashionista took a risk and wore a lacy Gothic Julien-McDonald gown. I have to say, it really paid off – she was breath-taking. With creeping black lace and an asymmetric skirt, the dress was classy but edgy. Selena accessorised with a gold Judith Leiber clutch, which gave the outfit a simple glamorous touch.

The beautiful and feisty Beyoncé, who announced her pregnancy at the award show, was draped in a full length, one shoulder orange Lanvin gown. The colour worked perfectly for her and complemented the hot summer night. Chandelier earrings supplemented a further touch of glamour for the singer, who later changed into an elegant purple sequined Dolce & Gabbana number for her performance onstage later that evening.

Ne-Yo was bold in bronze.

Another of my favourites was Miley Cyrus in a Roberto Cavalli long-sleeved dress, intricately patterned dress. I thought this was a very unusual piece but it captured my admiration in an instant.

Katy Perry stormed the black carpet in an Atelier Versace Asian-inspired ensemble, with Jimmy Choo heels and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Katy’s video ‘Firework’ won the VMA for Video of the Year.

Nicki Minaj made a splash with her wardrobe in… Well, I’m not sure what we’ll call it. She left us saying ‘wow’ (whether this is a good or a bad thing –I’m not sure). Nicki won the VMA for Best Hip Hop Video.

Musician Pete Wentz owned the black carpet, and provided us with some eye candy, in a tailored grey suit.

Kim Kardashian glittered in a figure-hugging gown, from Kaufman Franco, with a plunging V-neckline.

The Nickelodeon actress Victoria Justice attended the VMAs for the first time, in a gorgeous gold sequined dress by Theory and Rock & Republic shoes.

Mika Newton, a beautiful Ukranian singer, wore a wonderful gold lamé dress which I just adored!

Although this pains me to say, I have to admit: Justin Bieber looked dashing in those glasses. Justin wore paired striking red trousers with gold accessories. He was joined by Johnson, his pet snake?, on the black carpet and walked away with the VMA for Best Male Video.

Britney Spears wore a black sequined mini-dress from Moschino with a chevron print and a low slung belt. She paired this with Gina peep-toe calf boots. Although the shoes are absolutely gorgeous, I’m not sure they were the best for her.

Singer Kelly Rowland arrived at the theatre in Falguni & Shane Peacock. The gold embroidered dress, with a feathered skirt and leather detail wrapped around her waist, gave her a perfect sexy and confident look.

Katie Holmes wore a beautiful Azzedine Alaia halter-neck dress with tan Proenza Schouler suede ankle boots, adding a feminine touch glossy waves and flawless makeup.

Singer Jessie J arrived at the award show in a crystal studded bustier. She looked stunning despite her broken ankle.

Colton Haynes looked very suave, head to toe in Diesel Black Gold, in a flannel shirt, motorcycle jacket and dark jeans.
